Van entered the long-term-care profession in 1980 and has worked in a variety of roles, ranging from Administrator to corporate division Marketing Director, to his previous capacity as the Senior Vice President of Westcare Management, Inc. During that time he has owned facilities for the Developmentally Disabled, Assisted Living facilities, Skilled Nursing facilities, and a Home Health Agency — all the while providing consultation to various state regulatory agencies, state Attorney General offices, and private legal firms. Van has been active in both state and national trade associations, including the National Association of State Veterans Homes, the American Health Care Association, and the National Center for Assisted Living — having served as Chair of the latter.  He served as the second President of the Washington Health Care Association after it was formed in the mid-1980s, was a long-time board member of the Oregon Health Care Association and is a charter member of the board for Veterans Care Centers of Oregon.
