Gary, a Salem native, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army immediately after graduating from Oregon State University. The Army agreed with him, and he spent the following 26+ years in locations in Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Colorado, Germany, Turkey, and two tours in Vietnam — completing his service at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Gary retired from active duty in 1988. Six-and-a-half years later, in 1994, he and his wife returned to Salem and became involved in a variety of volunteer programs, including Meals on Wheels as a driver and a board member for 13 years. As one might expect, Gary has been active in many service groups, including: the Military Officer Association — 2 years as President of the Willamette Chapter and 6 years as the President of the Oregon Council of Chapters; the United Veterans’ Groups of Oregon — serving two years as Chair and subsequently as the Secretary/Treasurer; and joining the board of directors for Veterans Care Centers of Oregon in December of 2011.
